Abstract

497,299. Making boilers &c. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., and WEEKS, E. G. Sept. 10, 1937, No. 24758. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-Pressure drums or barrels for water-tube boilers &c., comprising a tube plate, a thin wrapper plate and a head plate welded to the tube and wrapper plates has the end of the wrapper plate adjacent to the head plate increased in thickness equal to that of the tube plate. The longitudinal edges of the tube plate 2 are tapered at 5 and welded to the wrapper plate 3, and on the end of the wrapper plate may be fillet welded at 12 a thickening plate 13, so as to make the abutting edges of head, tube and wrapper plates equal in thickness. The thickening plate is tapered at 15 and overlaps the welds 4 and the tapered edge of the tube plate. The inner joint between the thickening plate and wrapper plate is welded at 16 and the head plate 6 is then fusion welded at 14 to the wrapper and tube plates. In a modification, a tapered extension plate 13, Fig. 7, is first fusion welded to the end of the wrapper plate 3 and the longitudinal edges of the tube plate are tapered to the thickness of the wrapper plate except at the ends where they are shaped to mate with the extension. After welding the longitudinal edges, the head plate is fusion welded to the tube plate and to the extension of the wrapper plate.
