Abstract

A modification of the process described in the parent Specification for dressing iron ores consists in so adjusting the nature of the reducing atmosphere, the time, and the temperature, that the constituents rich in iron are converted substantially wholly into ferrosoferric oxide. The process may be carried out in a multi-hearth furnace, or preferably in a rotary tube furnace, the heating means at the discharge end of the furnace being operated with an inert flame or acting only as gas supply means, or being turned out, some of the succeeding burners being operated with a reducing flame, and complete burning of the combustible constituents being effected in the upper part of the furnace. Air and gas may be introduced through nozzles projecting into the furnace or through openings in the furnace wall covered by grates. The gases in the reduction zone contain relatively small proportions of combustible constituents, and the length of the reduction zone is such as to ensure the conversion of the iron-bearing constituents into ferroso-ferric oxide when treated for the required time at a suitable temperature. Constituents rich in iron which during the treatment have been separated from those poor in iron and have a different grain size may be removed by screening or blast sifting, and coarse phosphorite and similar constituents may be screened off from the non-magnetic constituents and added to the portion rich in iron.
