Abstract
3715. Haultain, H. E. T., and Moffat, J. W. Feb. 15. Ore and oxide processes. - In extracting iron, a mixture of oxide ore and carbon is showered through a furnace chamber, and excess carbon monoxide produced is burnt in the chamber out of contact with the mixture. The ore supplied from a hopper D' falls through a passage I, wherein calcination is effected by the burning of some of the excess carbon monoxide in contact with the ore, into the reduction chamber A, while the carbon and air are supplied through pipes J and F respectively. The hearth C forms a bath for the collection of the metal, and is fitted with electrodes K. In a modification, the ore and carbon are mixed before entering the furnace, the preliminary calcination in that case being dispensed with.
