Abstract

Zinc and other oxides.-In the production of volatile oxygen - containing compounds such as zinc oxide from material such as zinc ore, zinc drosses, metallic zinc or zinc alloys by means of an electrode furnace, a reducing gas is admitted to destroy oxygen-containing bye-products and to cause the complete combustion of combustible matters such as carbon particles from the electrodes. The electrodes are thus enveloped in reducing gas except where they are immersed in the charge. In the apparatus shown, the charge, which may be a mixture of zinc drosses and coal, is introduced at an opening A and carbon monoxide is introduced above the charge by an inlet B or below the charge by an inlet C and envelopes the electrode D. Zinc vapour mixed with carbon monoxide passes out at E into an oxidizing-chamber F to which air is admitted at G. Slag is withdrawn at H. A window is provided at K. The carbon monoxide may be admitted to the oxidizing-chamber F at J instead of being admitted to the furnace as above described.
