Abstract

<PICT:0893875/III/1> p Metal compounds are volatilized from powdered solid material by feeding the material into a chamber containing a whirling mass of hot gas formed by the combustion of a mixture of fuel and oxygen-containing gas, the solid material and the mixture being introduced into the chamber separately and from different directions. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of sulphidic ores to separate the volatile from the non-volatile sulphides. Zinc, lead and tin may be recovered as oxides or sulphides, from oxidic, sulphidic or sulphate raw materials. As shown, powdered material is introduced at 3 into a shaft 2 having radial or tangential inlets 4 for the introduction of fuel and air. Non-volatile components collect in a hearth below the shaft and volatile components pass out through a flue 1. An inlet 5 serves for the introduction of inert gas, steam, carbon dioxide or secondary air to increase the suspension time of the material. Additional gases, e.g. carbon monoxide, may be introduced to convert non-volatile compounds, e.g. sulphates, to volatile compounds.
