Distilling zinc.-A rotary or oscillating furnace plant for the production of zinc comprises a furnace chamber 1 provided with electrodes 2 and communicating at one end with a condenser 38 and at the other with a reduction chamber 5. The ore is fed through a hopper 14 into a preheating chamber 21 which communicates with the reduction chamber. A pipe conveys carbon monoxide from the condenser to the preheating chamber for combustion theiein. The impurities in the ore collect in the furnace 1 and may be melted and drawn off or removed in the solid state. In a modification for the production of zinc oxide from sulphurous zinc ores, a system similar to that shown in Fig. 1 is utilized. The chambers 6 and 7 are formed by an extension of the neck 5 and the air blast 9 and gas connection 18 enter the neck at a point nearer to the furnace. Finely divided ore is introduced through the hopper 16 and carbon is fed into the furnace through the hopper 15. The zinc fumes and carbon monoxide formed in the furnace pass into the neck 5, the zinc fumes being burnt to oxide of zinc and carried away with the products of combustion through the tube 17 to be utilized in any known manner.
