Abstract
157,295. Linnmann, W. April 28, 1919, [Convention date]. Alloys.-In a process for converting clippings into raw or cast iron by passing the molten clippings through a column of incandescent fuel, the clippings with additions such as slag ores &c. are melted by gases emanating from a gasifier and are then conducted through the hot zone of the latter so that the iron compounds and the admixtures such a silicon, manganese, &c. are reduced and alloyed with the iron. The drawing shows a furnace for carrying out this operation. The melting shaft c is provided with a passage d terminating beyond a projection e in the lower part a of the fuel shaft in which is formed the column of incandescent material. Fuel is fed into the upper portion b of the fuel shaft in which is provided an air nozzle f opposite the passage d. Air nozzles g are also provided in the lower part a. A number of fuel shafts or a number of melting shafts may be used. Air or gases previously heated in other apparatus may be introduced into the melting shaft or shafts.
