Abstract
248,418. Duffield, F. L. Oct. 3, 1924. Rotary and tilting furnaces.-In a plant for the reduction of iron ore and pyrites and the treatment of other materials such as dolomite, the material to be treated is fed from a hopper h by a roller and shoot k into the upper end of a conical roasting or calcining furnace a which is revolubly and tiltably mounted on a standard b and passes into the upper end of a conical reducing or sintering furnace c through a passage e in a structure d connecting the furnaces, the furnace c being also revolubly and tiltably mounted. Gaseous fuel from a gas producer o passes by a pipe p in a chamber w into the furnace c and reduces the ore &c. therein and the gases from this furnace pass into the furnace a where they are burnt with air supplied by a fan a through a pipe f, and effect the roasting or calcining of the ore &c. in that furnace. The reduced material in the molten form flows down a shoot q in the chamber wand into moulds r. The moulded material may then be further treated in an electric or other furnace. The furnaces a, c may be provided with internal ribs for assisting the action of the reducing gases &c. and the waste gases may be led away from the plant for other purposes.
