Abstract

254,389. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Soc. Anon des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne). April 1, 1925. Roasting.-In order to obtain complete elimination of sulphur from zinc ores such as zincblende or sulphide of zinc, and to obtain the product in the form of a porous grain favourable for the reduction process, the ore, in a fine state of division, is first roasted as completely as possible in a muffle or other roasting furnace. It is then thoroughly mixed with a small proportion of pulverized carbon, such as coke dust or slack coal. The proportion of carbon may vary according to the sulphur content of the roasted product, but is usually about 3 to 4 per cent. The mixture, which may be moistened with water, is charged into any suitable blast apparatus and heated by a source of heat such as a gas or oil burner to start combustion, a current of air or of oxidizing gas being blown or drawn through the charge. The remaining sulphides are converted into oxides, and the sulphates are decomposed by the carbon. The resulting product is in the form of a porous agglomerate containing only traces of sulphur. The sulphur dioxide produced in the process is recovered. Specifications 1535/11 and 119,223 are referred to.
