Abstract

496,923. Brakes for trailer vehicles. ARX, A. VON, and NEIDHART, P. May 10, 1938, No. 13972. [Class 103 (i)] In brake mechanism for trailer vehicles whereby the brakes are applied when the trailer overruns the tractor, and by the fall of the towing yoke the towing yoke is connected by links to the trailer and a brake operating thrust rod is connected at one end to the yoke and at the other to a friction shock absorber to ensure smooth application of the brakes. The forked draw-bar a is connected by links b to the turning fore-carriage of the trailer and a centrally arranged thrust-rod g is connected to the arm h of a friction shock absorber, the other arm i of which is connected by a rod l to the brakes. The shock-absorber comprises stationary and rotatable friction discs mounted on the pivot k. The brakes are thus operated by rearward movement of the bar a under the restraint of the shock-absorber when the trailer tends to overrun the tractor. The brakes are also applied by the fall of the drawbar if the coupling breaks. Upward movement of the links b is limited by stops e provided on the links, and pins s can be inserted in fixed sockets r to engage the stops to prevent downward movement of the links and application of the brakes when it is desired to back the vehicle.
