Abstract

496,511. Uniting by fusion. UNITED STEEL COS., Ltd., and REEVE, L. Aug. 3, 1937, No. 21396. [Class 83 (iv)] An arc welding electrode has a metal core on which is first wound one or more open spirals 2 of substantially incompressible material, over which is then applied a covering 4 of braided cotton or like and finally the covered core is coated with flux 5. In this manner the braid is retained near the surface of the flux in a single fluxing operation. The flux also fills the interstices of the winding 2 at 3 and of the braid. The winding 2, which may be of round wire or flat tape of soft iron or mild steel or alloying metal or of cotton string or tape previously hardened by shellac or artificial resin varnish or mixtures of such varnishes with fluxes, has a pitch less than ¢" and preferably “" in order to give support to the braid, which may have a pitch of 1¢" and about ten threads to the linear inch.
