Abstract

502,823. Uniting by fusion. PETERS & CO., Ltd., G. D., and GOODWIN, R. L. Sept. 25, 1937, No. 26021. [Class 83 (iv)] A flux coated arc welding electrode of the kind in which welding current is conducted from the surface to the wire or rod core, comprises a metallic core A on which is wound an open spiral metallic winding B such as a round or polygonal wire or strip, between the turns of which flux or slag forming material C is applied leaving a portion D of the metallic winding exposed, the whole surface being then furnished with a conductive coating E by dipping, spraying, or electrolytic or chemical deposition. The flux may be applied by extrusion of a paste or by winding a fibrous flux between the convolutions of the wire &c. The conductive coating may be applied by electrolytic or chemical deposition or by spraying with or dipping in a metal or other bonded conductive powder. The exposed surface D may be cleaned or etched prior to application of the coating E. The electrode may be in the form of a flexible wire suitable for coiling or in short rod lengths.
