Abstract

Utensils and containers used in the dairy and foodstuffs industries are sterilized by applying an aqueous solution containing the chlorite radicle and having a pH value of less than 7. The pH value of the solution may be controlled by addition of hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, acetic acid, benzoic acid, nitric acid, boric acid, or acid salts such as acid alkali phosphates, acid sulphates, acid phthalates, or acid fluorides. Alternatively the solution may be prepared from a dry mixture of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal chlorite and a soluble acid or acid salt such as boric acid, sodium or potassium acid phosphates, acid sulphates, or sodium silicofluoride, and in this connection potassium dihydrogen phosphate containing 2 per cent of sodium chlorite is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also any stable composition of chlorous acid or its soluble salts as a fungicide or bactericide, bleaching agent, or for the sour and bleaching operations in laundry practice. A mixture of one part of sodium chlorite with two parts of sodium silicofluoride is stated to be suitable for use in laundries. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Utensils and containers used in the dairy and foodstuffs industries are sterilized by applying an aqueous solution containing the chlorite radicle and having a pH value of less than 7.
