Abstract
Vegetable textile fibres are bleached in a bath consisting of a peroxide to which has been added a metaphosphate or metaphosphoric acid itself. If desired a compound such as sodium silicate, soda ash, or caustic soda may be added to give the bath any desired alkalinity. The metaphosphate is added in amounts of 1--3 lbs. per 100 gallons of bleach bath. In examples: (1) American cotton cloth is boiled with 2 per cent caustic soda lye, and then bleached at 180 DEG F., for 1\ba1/2\be hours in a bath made by adding \ba1/2\be gallon of 100 volume hydrogen peroxide to 99\ba1/2\be gallons of water, then adding sodium silicate until neutral or phenolphthalein and finally \ba1/8\be per cent by weight of sodium metaphosphate; (2) As in example (1) except that caustic soda is used as the alkaline agent; (3) As in example (1) except that soda ash is used as the alkaline agent; (4) The process of example (1) is applied to striped poplin shirtings.
