Abstract

5-Halogen-trimellitic acid is prepared by oxidizing 5-halogen-pseudocumene. Heated with an alkali or substance having an alkaline action it yields 5-hydroxy-trimellitic acid, 5-halogen pseudocumene may be obtained by halogenating pseudocumene. Examples describe the preparation of 5-chloro and 5-bromo trimellitic acids employing potassium permanganate as oxidizing agent, and hydrolysis of the 5-halogen acid with caustic soda or with piperidine to yield the 5-hydroxy acid.
