Abstract

494,289. Mercury switches. CIANCHI, A. April 16, 1937, No. 11816/38. Divided out of 494,155 and addition to 453,229. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch of the kind described in the parent Specification having a plunger 3 with a valve 5 and a byepass 6, the electrode 8 is normally out of the mercury. Energization of the solenoid 9 attracts the armature 4 and lowers the plunger. The valve 5 remains closed but mercury then slowly passes through the hole 6 till the levels are the same outside and inside the plunger. The electrode 8 will then engage the mercury and complete a circuit to the electrode 7. On de-energizing the coil 9, the plunger will float upwards, the valve 5 opening to allow a quick movement. In a modification, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the vessel has a side limb containing a third electrode.
