Abstract
479,095. Mercury switches. CIANCHI, A. July 28, 1936, No. 20946/37. Divided application, and addition to 453,229. [Class 38 (v)] A mercury switch of the type described in the parent Specification comprises an armature 8 which when drawn down by a solenoid 13 displaces mercury so that contact 2 is connected to contacts 1 and 3. If coil 13 is de-energized the armature 8 rises but a ball 9 engages a seating 10 so that the mercury inside the armature is lifted. In this position, contact between 3 and 2 is maintained but contact between 3 and 1 is broken due to the general fall in level of the mercury. The mercury slowly leaks away through a small gap in the seating 10 to break contact between 3 and 2, and restore contact between 3 and 1. Different contact arrangements are described produced by having different relative volumes of the armature and the mercury. Also a conical valve may be used instead of a ball valve.
