Abstract

494,159. Envelopes &c. ; bags &c. PIRIE, APPLETON, & CO., Ltd., and HAAS, A. April 19, 1937, No. 11094. [Class 146 (ii)] [Also in Group XVII] In a self-adhesive envelope, bag, or the like, uncoated protective material, which is formed or provided upon one or each adhesive bearing part, is immovably disposed over and partially covers the associated adhesive surface, or projects outwardly of and permanently along one or each margin of that adhesive surface to leave the whole or the greater portion of that surface exposed, the protective material normally holding the adhesive surfaces spaced apart but permitting them to be brought into sealing connection by localized pressure applied in the regions of the adhesive areas left exposed by the protective material. As shown in Fig. 1, the back of an envelope is formed mainly by a folded bottom flap 4, this flap being provided with holes to reveal areas of adhesive on a strip 3 which is secured behind the flap 4. The adhesive 1 on the closure flap 2 can only make contact with that on the strip 3 by applying localized pressure on the flap 2 immediately over the holes in the flap 4. In a modification, the back flap carries the coating of adhesive, and a strip of material provided with holes therein is secured over the adhesive coating. As shown in Fig. 7, the upper edge of the back flap 4 is folded back and secured to the outer face of that flap to form a rib 9 which projects outwardly of the related coating 3 of adhesive, and a similar rib 8 is formed on the sealing flap 2. When the sealing flap is folded, the ribs keep the adhesive coatings apart until localized pressure is applied between the ribs. Ribs may be formed adjacent both sides of either adhesive coating, or one rib may be formed adjacent one coating and another adjacent the other coating by applying to the envelope separate strips of material or pieces of cord, or the ribs may be formed by embossing the envelope to provide upstanding portions adjacent the coatings of adhesive.
