Abstract
493,204. Delivering material from hoppers. THOMPSON, H. H., DAVIES, A. E., and THOMPSON, M. D. April 8, 1937, No. 9958. [Class 78 (i)] Material such as workshop swarf is fed from a hopper to a magnetic separator or other device at a substantially uniform rate by a hollow roller or cylinder arranged at or adjacent the bottom of the hopper. The roller is provided at opposite sides with longitudinal openings so that when it is rotated or oscillated, material is taken from the hopper by the edges of the openings, part dropping through the roller and the remainder being carried round by the roller to the outlet of the hopper. In the embodiment shown, the roller comprises sleeves c, d each provided with longitudinal slots at opposite sides, the size of the opening in the roller being determined by the angular adjustment of the sleeves. The slots may be arranged parallel to the axis of the roller or may be part helical, and their edges serrated. The portions l of the sides of the hopper are pivotally mounted at m so as to be movable outwardly against the action of springs n by lumps of material too large to be taken by the roller. A rotating shaft v provided with fingers v prevents bridging of the material.
