Abstract
A rubber composition for insulating purposes comprises de-proteinized rubber, an antioxidant, zinc oxide and fillers, and an accelerator which yields nascent sulphur at vulcanizing temperatures, such as tetramethyl thiuram disulphide or polysulphide, but no free sulphur. The rubber is de-proteinized by digesting it at a temperature of from 175 to 205 DEG C. in an autoclave partially filled with water or a dilute solution of sodium chloride or an alkali, all air being removed in the initial stages of the heating. It is then washed in an enclosed steam heated washing machine, the wash water being kept boiling, steam, or a non-oxidizing gas, such as nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide or producer gas, being bubbled therethrough. An alcohol wash may then be applied. After draining the water off, an antioxidant is incorporated in the rubber, and it is dried in the presence of a non-oxidizing gas.
