Abstract
Water-containing alkali hydroxides are dehydrated, if desired after partial dehydration by known methods, by treating them in a solid or molten condition or in a non-aqueous solution with quantities of alkali oxide equivalent to the degree of dehydration required. If complete dehydration is required an excess may be added. It is also advantageous to add an excess of alkali oxide when the caustic alkali is to be employed in water producing reactions; for example condensation reactions which take place under the influence of caustic alkalis. According to examples, (1) sodium oxide is added to caustic soda in a solid or molten state; (2) solid caustic soda and sodium oxide are ground together in a closed ball mill; (3) sodium oxide is stirred into molten caustic soda at 350 DEG C; (4) sodium oxide is added to alcoholic caustic soda at atmospheric or slightly raised temperature.ALSO:Water-containing alkali hydroxides are dehydrated, if desired after partial dehydration by known methods, by treating them in a solid or molten condition or in a non-aqueous solution with quantities of alkali oxide equivalent to the degree of dehydration required. If complete dehydration is required an excess may be added. It is also advantageous to add an excess of alkali oxide when the caustic alkali is to be employed in water producing reactions; for example condensation reactions which take place under the influence of caustic alkalis. According to one example sodium oxide is added to an alcoholic solution of caustic soda.
