Abstract

Alkoxy or alkylthio derivatives of 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid are made by causing carbon dioxide under pressure to act on an alkali salt of an alkoxy or alkylthio derivative of b -naphthol or on the free naphthol in the presence of an alkali carbonate. In examples (1) the sodium salt of the monomethylether of 2 : 6-dihydroxynaphthalene is treated with carbon dioxide to give 6-methoxy-2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid; (2) the sodium salt of the monomethylether of 2 : 7-dihydroxynaphthalene similarly yields 7-methoxy-2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid; (3) the sodium salt of 6-methylmercapto-2-naphthol similarly yields 6-methylmercapto-2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid; (4) 5-methoxy-2-naphthol is heated with potassium carbonate and carbon dioxide to give 5-methoxy-2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid. 5-Methoxy-2-naphthol is made together with 6-methoxy-1-naphthol by methylating 2 : 5-dioxynaphthalene with methyl alcoholic sulphuric acid and it is isolated as the difficulty soluble sodium salt.
