492,822. Prepayment mechanism for meters. WILSON, J. H., and JOHNSON, S. April 14, 1937, No. 10560. [Class 27] [Also in Group XXVI] In a mechanism comprising one or more trains of gears in which the power available for operating the mechanism in one direction is very low, the torque available for actuating an element of the mechanism in that direction is augmented to compensate for the internal frictional resistance of the mechanism by means responsive to the force of gravity and in constant operative relation with the element during the continuance of the torque. The invention is particularly applicable to the prepayment mechanism of electricity meters and the like where the torque of the meter at low load is so small that the opening of the supply switch might be delayed. The Figure shows diagrammatically the invention applied to a mechanism of which the shaft a is adapted to be rotated first in one direction by the gears b, c and d and then in the other direction by the gears e, f, g. A gear-wheel n fixed to the shaft a is biassed in one direction by means of a weighted toothed quadrant l loosely mounted on a shaft m. The quadrant may be replaced by a freely moving vertical rack or by a biassed internally toothed wheel.
