Abstract
492,500. Electric signalling systems ; road signals for controlling traffic. GRUNDY, A. G., and MANWOOD, G. A. Jan. 31, 1938, No. 2945. [Classes 40 (i) and 118 (ii)] In a signalling device for use by intending passengers on a public road vehicle, destination-indicating lamps 15 are adapted to be selectively lit by switches (not shown) operated by the intending passenger and a lamp 17 is lit on each occasion to signal that the vehicle is required. The upper part of the casing 2 is divided into compartments closed by opal glass 7, upon the inner side of which is painted the destination. The lower part containing the lamp 17 is open at the bottom so that the intending passenger is illuminated, light also passing through the opal glass 9 and clear glass 10 between which is the opaque stencil 11 painted on its front face to match the opal glass. The casing 2 may conveniently be mounted on a lamp post which also carries a box containing the batteries, if used, and the switch-box, having push-button switches. When a battery supply is used, separate lamps may be used to perform the functions carried out by lamp 17. In a modification, the lamps illuminate the sign from the front, and a transformer may be interposed between the mains and the lamps. The switch-box may be illuminated at night and a clock provided.
