[Class 52 (iii)] In school-desks provided with lockers, the lid j is mounted at its rear edge on hinges provided on carrier members e adapted to slide on bars c fixed to the desk sides d so that the lid may slide either when raised or lowered, the carriers providing the means whereby the lid may be supported in an inclined position, in which the underside serves as a support or easel, and also providing means whereby it is maintained in any position along the bars. The bars c are spaced away from the side walls d of the desk by distance pieces at each end and the semicircular carrier plates e have side flanges with holes through which the bars c pass. Angle strips i pivoted to the plates e are fixed to the side edges of the lid j and have tail pieces abutting against the front flange f of the carrier plates when the lid is raised. A further stop projection n may be provided. In the raised position, the weight of the lid causes the carrier plates to be clamped on the bars c. A strip o has studs fitting into holes q at various heights on the lid to form a rest when used as an easel, it may also fit into holes r in the front edge of the desk to support the lid in a horizontal position. Fig. 10 shows a modification in which the semicircular carrier plate s has its curved edge directed downwardly and flanged inwardly at t, the bar v passing through holes in this flange. At the front edge of the flange is a lug w adapted to contact with the tail piece of the angle strip i to form a final stop, and holes y in the tail piece may be engaged by a spring-pressed peg z on the carrier plate to give several inclined positions for the lid.
