Abstract

491,825. Stuffing - box substitutes. ROTARY SEAL CO. Sept. 28, 1937, No. 26305. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1936. [Class 122 (v)] A shaft packing device comprises a cup shaped member 21 bearing on the casing 17 and enclosing a resilient packing element 29 having a sleeve portion 27, frictionally engaging and rotating with the shaft, and a flange 25 forced at its periphery into contact with the bottom of the cup, whereby it can act as a diaphragm to permit axial play of the shaft without breaking the seal. The periphery of the flange may be engaged by a collar 33 secured to or mounted slidably within the cup and loaded by a spring 37. The sleeve portion 27 may be gripped by a band 31. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the construction shown in Fig. 4 (Cancelled) in which the cup shaped member is replaced by a ring 49 having peripheral slots engaged by detents in a member 45 surrounding the resilient packing 29 and loaded by a spring 37. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
