Abstract
491,823. Furnace grates. AMERICAN ENGINEERING CO. Aug. 18, 1937, No. 22676. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1936. [Class 51 (i)] In a mechanical stoker having an underfeed section and an overfeed section, the overfeed section consists of a series of laterally spaced fluid conducting stationary members between which are disposed movable fuel and ash conveying members. Fig. 1 shows a multiple retort underfeed stoker with an overfeed section 3 at the lower end comprising spaced cooling tubes 16 which are extended upwardly and associated with the tuyÞres 5 and deadplates 12. Between the tubes are arranged reciprocating bars 29, Fig. 3, comprising a pair of spaced plates connected by stepped portions 65, with air apertures 66 and reciprocating bars 28, Fig. 6, consisting of single plates with a stepped upper edge. The bars are provided with lateral flanges which rest on upper and lower supports and are reciprocated in groups by rods 33. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which the stepped bars 74 arranged between tubes 70 are reciprocated by cams 91, their lower ends being supported on rollers 76 which are adjustable to vary the distance by which the bars project above the tubes. Figs. 12 and 13 show a further modification in which wide and narrow reciprocating members 102, 104 are arranged between the unevenly spaced tubes 105. These members have lateral flanges such as 113 which engage with grooves in fixed supports 109, 110 and are actuated by a system of links and levers. Fig. 19 shows a modificationwherein endless chains 163 mounted on sprocket wheels 165, 166 are arranged between the tubes. The chains are arranged in groups each group being driven by gearing.
