[Class 51 (i).] In a mechanical stoker having an overfeed grate of the kind described in Specifications 287,748, [Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustion apparatus of], and 349,811 particularly applicable to underfeed stokers of the multiple retort type having the overfeed grate located at the discharge end, the forward grate members of the series of pivotally interconnected grate members is given a straight reciprocating movement in the direction of the fuel feed, while the remaining members of the series have a combined oscillating and reciprocating motion. The grate members 20 .. 26 are pivotally interconnected in end-to-end relation by pins 27. The members 20 are mounted in frames 40 provided with rollers 45 adapted to move in guides attached to angle members 47. Motion is transmitted to the grate members from a power shaft 62 provided with a lever 61, connected by a rod 59 and lever arms 55, 58 on a shaft 56 to a link 53 pivotally connected to lugs on the frames carrying the grate members 21. Rocker-like supports 68 are provided beneath extensions 67 of the frames of the grate members 22. The frames of the grate members 24 are provided with downward extensions 74 keyed to the power shaft 62 while the frames of the grate members 25 are provided with lugs 77 pivotally connected to the upper ends of floating supporting links 78 mounted on a shaft 79. The rear grate member comprises a frame 81 carrying bars 82 and adapted to slide upon a casting 83.
