Abstract
491,299. Gas - purifying processes. THORNTON, A. A. (Kohleund Eisenforschung Ges.) Feb. 19, 1938, No. 5292. [Class 55 (ii)] In the removal of organic sulphur compounds from fuel gases containing hydrogen from which hydrogen sulphide has previously been removed, the gases are passed over a copper catalyst at temperatures of 570 to 650‹ C., preferably at about 600‹ C., the hydrogen sulphide formed being removed by usual absorption agents. The latter preferably comprises moistened and then dry lime. The gas obtained may be used in the annealing of sheet metal, strips and articles of steel and also in the production of methanol &c. by catalytic reactions. Suitable apparatus comprises an externally heated tube 1 filled with copper shavings 2 communicating with a purifier box 5 filled with a staggered arrangement of insertions 6 of which the upper contain burnt lime and the lower contain moist lime. The gases pass above the surface of the lime in the insertions, but may also pass vertically therethrough by opening the bases of the insertions.
