Abstract

1,240,081. Chemical separation of gases, H 2 S, CO 2 , sulphur. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 12 Dec., 1969 [17 Dec., 1968], No. 60832/69. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C5] Hydrogen sulphide, CO 2 and organic sulphur compounds are removed from a gas mixture e.g. natural gas, see Division C5, with an absorbent liquid containing at least one neutral, oxygen containing, water soluble organic liquid and from 0.2 to 5 moles of at least one organic base dissolved therein, e.g. methanol containing an alkanolamine which absorbent is regenerated by flashing in a column to which methanol is delivered. H 2 S, CO 2 , CH 4 and some methanol escape form the top of the column and are scrubbed with water to remove methanol. The resultant H 2 S containing gas stream may be used to prepare sulphur by using it as a feed gas to a Claus furnace. An acid having a pKa of 7-11 e.g. boric acid, phenol or arsenic trioxide may be added to the absorbent.
