Abstract

491,245. Seats ; mattresses. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and CHAPMAN, W. H. Jan. 27, 1937, Nos. 2373, 16517, and 18849. [Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iv)] A seat, mattress, &c. has an understructure or base of rigid or semi-rigid material, e.g. wood or sheet metal, which comprises or embodies a well part in which ledges or platforms d, Fig. 1, are provided between the upper surface b of the base and the bottom of the well, and the upholstery or filling, which is preferably sponge rubber formed with cavities, is supported upon the upper surface of the base, on the ledges and on the bottom of the well. For example, the side walls of the well are of stepped formation, while the front and rear walls e may be sloped or vertical. The walls f<1>, Fig. 15, of the cavities in the sponge rubber filling may be arranged to rest upon the ledges d, and perforations may be made in the material of the base to coincide with the cavities in the rubber filling. In the case of a seat back, Fig. 18, or a mattress, the ledges d are at the sides, and are preferably curved in longitudinal outline. Part of the filling may be constituted by springs i, Fig. 25. The ledges may be formed by strips or laths of wood or metal secured in the well.
