7 Claims.

This invention relates to window seats. It is particularly directed to a seat adapted to be mounted on a window sill for use when cleaning the outside of a window.

An object of this invention is to provide a window seat construction of the character described, which may be readily mounted in position for use on a window sill or removed therefrom and collapsed into compact form for storage.

' A further object of this invention is to provide a strong, rugged window seat construction of the character described, comprising few and simple parts, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to handle, comfortable in use and practical and eflicient to a high degree.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,

Referring now in detail to the drawing, Ill designates a window provided with the usual window frame I2 having a bottom portion I20. and downwardly and outwardly inclined window sill l3. As shown in the drawing, there is mounted on the window a window seat l5 embodying the invention. For attaching the window seat in position for use, there is attached to the frame portion l2a, a pair of spaced, similar wall 25 disposed parallel and spaced from said surface 26.

There is further screwed or otherwise attached to the window frame portion l2 for the purpose hereinafter explained, a pair of eyelets 26 disposed beyond the members IS.

The window seat [5 comprises a bottom member 30 and a back member 3i hinged to the rear edge of the member 30 as by a pair of hinges 32. The members 30 and 3| may be made of wood or any other suitable material and are preferably of substantially the same size.

Fixed to the underside of the bottom member 3|! are a pair of spaced, parallel angle shaped members 34 each having a portion 35 screwed to the under side of said bottom member and a downwardly extending flat tongue 31 substantially aligned with the front edge of said bottom member. The tongues 31 are received within the slots 22 of the members l6 and contact surface 20 of. window frame portion I2a. There is further fixed to the underside of said member 38 adjacent the side edges 38 thereof, a pair of members 39 of angular transverse cross section, each having a horizontal wall 40 contacting said underside and a vertical wall M substantially aligned with one of said side edges. The under edges 42 of said vertical walls 4| are inclined downwardly and outwardly and contact the inclined upper surface of the sill l3.

The members 39 thus maintain the bottom board 30 at a horizontal level. It will be noted that the rear edge of the bottom member 30 extends but little beyond the rear edges of the members 39 so that the weight of the person sitting on the window seat is supported directly by the members 39. With such construction the weight of the person sitting on the window seat will not be directed downwardly beyond the window sill.

Attached to the rear surface of the back member 3i adjacent the upper corners thereof are spaced, aligned eyelets 42. Extending through said eyelets is a flexible strap 43 having snap hooks 44 at the outer ends thereof engaged with the eyelets 26 fixed to the window frame portion I2a. The strap 43 is of such length that the back 3| will be supported in somewhat upwardly and outwardly inclined position for comfortably supporting the back of a person sitting in the seat when cleaning the window.

It will now be understood that the window seat i5 is firmly supported on the window by reason of the engagement of the tongues 31 within the slots 22 thereof and contact with the surfaces 20 of the window frame, and the engagement of the portions 4| with the window sill la. The back of the seat is firmly supported by the strap 43 attached to the eyelets 26. The window seat may be removed by disengaging the hooks 44 from the eyelets 26 and lifting the bottom member 36 upwardly. The back 3| may be swung against the top of the bottom member 30 whereby the entire window seat is collapsed into compact form for storage.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing, is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a, limiting sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination, a window seat comprising a. bottom member, a back member hinged to the rear edge of the bottom member, a member attached to the underside of said bottom member and having an inclined underedge, and means for attaching said window seat to a window frame comprising a slotted metallic member fixed to said frame and adapted to receive in the slot a cooperating rigid member fixed to said bottom member whereby said window seat is prevented from lateral movement in a plane parallel to the plane of said bottom member while in operative position.

2. In combination, a window seat comprising a bottom member, a back member hinged to the rear edge of the bottom member, a member attached to the underside of said bottom member and having an inclined underedge, and a member attached to said bottom member and having a downwardly extending tongue adjacent the front edge of said bottom member, and means for attaching said window seat to a window frame comprising a slotted metallic member fixed to said frame and adapted to receive in the slot a cooperating rigid member fixed to said bottom member whereby said window seat is prevented from lateral movement in a plane parallel to the plane of said bottom member while in operative position.

In combination, a window seat comprising a bottom member, a back member hinged to the rear edge of the bottom member, a member attached to the underside of said bottom member and having an inclined underedge, a member attached to said bottom member and having a downwardly extending tongue adjacent the front edge of said bottom member, and means for attaching said window seat to a window frame comprising a slotted metallic member fixed to said frame and adapted to receive in the slot said downwardly extending tongue, and a strap on said back member having hooks at the ends thereof, whereby said window seat cannot be detached from said frame without bodily lifting said seat.

In combination with the frame of a window and a downwardly and rearwardly inclined window sill, a pair of anchor members attached to the bottom of the window frame and each formed with a slot, a window seat having a bottom member, a pair of members attached to the underside of said bottom member and each having a downwardly extending tongue received in one of said slots, a pair of members attached to the underside of said bottom member and having downwardly and outwardly inclined underedges contacting said sill, a back member hinged to the rear edge of said bottom member, and means for limiting the outward pivotal movement of said back comprising a member attached to said frame.

In combination with the frame of a window and a downwardly and rearwardly inclined window sill, a pair of anchor members attached to the bottom of the window frame and each formed with a slot, a window seat having a bottom member, a pair of members attached to the underside of said bottom member and each having a downwardly extending tongue received in one of said slots, a pair of members attached to the underside of said bottom member and having downwardly and outwardly inclined underedges contacting said sill, a back member hinged to the rear edge of said bottom member, a pair of spaced eyelets attached to the outer surface of said back member, and a fiexible strap extending through said eyelets and having means at the outer ends thereof for attachment to the window frame.

6. In a window seat for a window having a window frame and a downwardly and rearwardly extending window sill, said seat comprising a bottom member and a back member hinged to the rear edge of said bottom member, a pair of members attached to said bottom member and disposed perpendicular to the front edge of said bottom member and having downwardly and rearwardly inclined underedges adapted to contact said window sill for maintaining the bottom member at a substantially horizontal level, means for attaching said window seat to a window frame comprising a slotted metallic member fixed to said frame and adapted to receive in the slot a cooperating rigid member fixed to said bottom member, and means for attaching said back member to the frame of the window.

7. In combination, a window seat for a window having a window frame and a downwardly and rearwardly extending window sill, said seat comprising a bottom member, a back member hinged to the rear edge of said bottom member, a pair of members attached to said bottom member and disposed perpendicular to the front edge of said bottom member and having downwardly and rearwardly inclined underedges adapted to contact said window sill for maintaining the bottom member at a substantially horizontal level, means for attaching said window seat to a window frame comprising a slotted metallic member fixed to said frame and adapted to receive in the slot a cooperating rigid member fixed to said bottom member, means for attaching said back member to the frame of the window, said means comprising a pair of eyelets attached to said back member, and. a flexible strap extending through said eyelets and encircling the back of said back member and having snap hooks at the ends thereof.
