Abstract
491,076. Tunnel kilns. PHILLIPS, G. D. Feb. 22, 1937, No. 5321. [Class 51 (ii)] More uniform distribution of heat through the cross section of the preheating-zone of a tunnel kiln is obtained by withdrawing gases at a number of distributed points along the lower part of the kiln, and returning a portion to the upper part of the kiln at distributed points in jets which form gaseous curtains or baffles tending to prevent longitudinal drift of the kiln atmosphere. The portion of the gases not returned is exhausted to the stack. In the arrangement shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1 the heating-gases from the main burners, and from burners B<1> in the hotter parts of the preheating-zone are drawn from the space between the truck tops and the goods supports by a fan D, the delivery side of which is in damper-controlled communication with the stack D<2>, and with nozzles E, E<1> ending in narrow slots across the width of the roof of the kiln. A second fan F is connected on the suction side at spaced points F<1>, F<2>, F<3> with the lower part of the kiln chamber, and on the delivery side with the stack D<2>, roof nozzles e<1>, e<2> at a greater distance from the entrance end of the kiln than the point F<1>, F<2>, F<3>, and with ports F<4>, F<5> leading into the lower part of the kiln chamber and nearer the entrance end. The roof nozzles may have their ends turned to deliver a sheet of gases in the direction of the exit end of the kiln. In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 6 the delivery sides of the two fans are connected by the main DF from which lead the roof nozzles E, E<1>, F<6>, F<7>, and the fan D is connected on the suction side both with the end of the kiln chamber through the pipe D<1>, and with the end of a wall flue A<1> in damper-controlled communication at spaced points with the lower part of the kiln chamber. By manipulation of the various dampers provided, the temperature of the gases returned at the various points can be controlled.
