Abstract

<PICT:0489768/IV/1> The continuous dissolution of cellulose xanthate in lye and water to produce viscose is effected in a rotating drum containing two or more rollers arranged end to end and extending substantially from end to end of the drum; the rollers run on the inner cylindrical surface of the drum and at least one of them has a diameter such that it nearly fills the internal cross-section of the drum. In the Figure, a is a rotating drum containing rollers d, d1 and d2. Cellulose xanthate, water and alkali lye are introduced continuously by means of the stationary hopper b and the conveyer worm c so that the liquid level in the drum a is always higher than the hollow trunnion k through which the viscose is discharged. The roller d1 affects the comminution of the pasty lumps of xanthate which tend to float on the surface of the liquid and the discharge of viscose free from lumps is effected by means of the knife-like striker g, fixed to shaft h, which keeps free the narrow passage i formed between the concentric shielding disc e and the end wall f of the drum. The striker g may be stationary or rotatable and there may be more than one passage i with as many strikers g. According to the Provisional Specification, the rotating drum may contain one roller only, whose length is equal to that of the drum, or it may contain several rollers all of equal diameter arranged end to end, whose total length is equal to that of the drum.
