Abstract

489,168. Forced-flow steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Dec. 18, 1936, No. 34784. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1935. [Class 123 (ii)] In a forced-flow boiler having a number of parallel connected long small bore evaporating tubes 207 discharging into a separator 232, the steam is led from the separator through a superheater consisting of a number of parallel connected horizontal tubes 242 at different levels between upright headers 241, 243. At starting, all the tubes are filled with water and the burners lit, and when pressure steam discharges through a vent on the outlet pipe of the superheater, the vent is closed and a stop valve in the pipe is opened to supply steam to an auxiliary turbine driving the feed and fuel pumps. Water is supplied in excess of the quantity evaporated and the excess is continuously withdrawn from the separator. The evaporating tubes are fed from a collector 204 through resistors 205 and they are so arranged horizontally along and around the walls of the combustion chamber that thev are equally heated. The gases from the combustion chamber flow horizontally over the superheating tubes 242, feedheating tubes 202 and through an air heater 282 to the uptake. The superheating tubes are coiled to protect the walls of the gas passage.
