Abstract

Montan wax is bleached by treating first with hydrogen peroxide and then with chromic acid. Treatment with 5 per cent of peroxide as a 1-30 per cent solution at 90-120 DEG C. for 1-6 hrs., after adding acid, neutral, or alkaline aqueous or organic liquids, is suitable. The chromic acid treatment is usually as described in Specification 302,626, [Class 91], chromic anhydride, or sodium, potassium, or ammonium bichromate and sulphuric acid being used. In an example, 1000 kg. of crude montan wax is fused, 4,500 kg. of 40 per cent sulphuric acid mixed in, and 500 litres of 30 per cent peroxide added little by little and the whole stirred for 3 hrs. at 105 DEG C. 1000 Kg. of chromic anhydride is slowly added and the whole stirred until the anhydride is used up; the wax is washed with sulphuric acid and then with water.
