Mineral waxes, purifying &c.-Montan wax especially suitable for fixing oil of turpentine and other solvents or diluents in shoe-creams and the like, is obtained by bleaching with oxidizing agents, and then further treating with a solution of a quantity of oxidizing agent 20-50 per cent of that required for the customary bleaching. Or the crude or deresinified wax may be treated initially with a corresponding excess of a solution of oxidizing agent. 175-200 per cent CrO3 relative to and for treating deresinified wax as compared with the usual 140 per cent is specified. In an example, 100 kilograms of deresinified crude wax are malted over about 200 litres of a spent solution or chromic acid in sulphuric acid. 200 kilograms of CrO3, as an aqueous solution containing about 95 grams of CrO3 and 400 grams of H2SO4 per litre, are then added gradually with stirring and in stages as described in Specification 302,626 with a rise in temperature to 112‹ C. Water is allowed to evaporate for about 5 hours, bringing the boiling temperature to about 118‹ C. The spent liquor is withdrawn, and the bleached wax freed from chromium salts and acid as described in Specification 302,626.
