Abstract
487,760. Gear - cutting tools. SYKES, W. E. Feb. 10, 1938, No. 4192. [Class 83 (iii)] A pinion-type gear cutter of helical or spur gear form comprises a toothed body 10 provided on the front face with radial serrations 24 engaged by complementary serrations 28 on the cutting blades 27. The serrations may be of American Standard Thread, or other form in cross section and the blades are secured by screws 25, 26. After assembly, the cutter is bored to provide concentric surfaces 33 on the blades and a counterbore in the body which receives a blade-seating ring 35. The blades are roughly generated and then removed and the complementary serrations lapped together. Finally the blades are reassembled and finish generated. In a modification, Fig. 5, a straighttoothed cutter has body teeth which are inclined on the serrated face 44 to a transverse plane and the blades are of uniform thickness so that a rake A is provided at the cutting faces without special grinding of the blades.
