Abstract

575,863. Gear cutting. HOWDEN, J. R. (National Broach & Machine Co.) April 18, 1944, No. 7164. [Class 83 (iii)] In a method of finishing involute toothed gears by the intermeshing generator crossedaxis process, a cutter tooth 30 after re-grinding to sharpen the cutting edges 23 has its chordal thickness a reduced and the centre distance of the cutter and work is accordingly diminished to utilise a chordal tooth thickness a<1> equal to the original thickness a, the outside diameter of the cutter being also reduced as at 32 to produce an addendum c which is greater than the original addendum b. In an involute gear of 7-9 diametral pitch the chordal thickness a is reduced by about 0.004 inch on the first regrind and the outside diameter of the cutter is reduced by an amount which will increase the addendum by 0.002 to 0.01 inch, preferably about 0.005 inch. At each subsequent regrinding, until the tooth lands 22 have been ground away, the addendum is increased still further.
