Abstract
749,404. Gear-cutting and finishing. FELLOWS GEAR SHAPER CO. Dec. 21, 1953, No. 35457/53. Class 83 (3). A method of producing face and tapered gears G with teeth having oppositely-bowed formations on their side faces, which gears are designed to mesh at a given centre-distance with a cylindrical pinion P, consists in engaging the gear with a cylindrical gear-like shaping, shaving or lapping cutter, the cutter C being oversize in relation to the pinion P so that the centre-distance between cutter and gear is greater than the given centre distance, and effecting a relative generating movement. The teeth of the cutter C are greater in number than those of the pinion P, but are of equal pitch. The generation may be carried out as described in Specification 535,918 or U.S.A. Specification 982,581. The cutter may be offset or of helical form, if the gear to be cut is to mesh with a gear of that type. By slightly inclining the axis of the cutter, the tooth-bearing may be moved away from the middle of the gear teeth.
