690,338. Gear-cutting and finishing. KITCHEN, H. E. Jan. 17, 1950 [March 2, 1949], No. 1245/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (iii). [Also in Group XXIV] A method of generating a system of involute gears having the same base pitch but with varying diameters, consists in so relating them to a single pinion-type cutter for producing them that at'least the desired length of contact is generated on each gear, the lengths of contact being approximately equal. The calculations for cutting a pair of gears are set forth, given the cutter, the centre distance and the numbers of teeth of the pinion and gear. A desired length of the path of contact is first specified and an addendum assumed for the pinion. The dimensions of a gear to mesh with the pinion are then calculated, including the length of the contact. If this is less than the length first specified, a new addendum is assumed and the calculations repeated. Alternatively, a new length of contact could be specified or the diameter of the pinion reduced. By modifying the teeth of the cutter, a similar modification may automatically be imparted to each gear. A shaving cutter of almost identical dimensions to the pinion-type cutter may be used for finishing.
