649,984. Gear - finishing. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. Jan. 1, 1948, No. 58. Convention date, April 29, 1947. [Class 83 (iii)] A method of crowning gears by shaving or lapping, wherein the gear G3 and a gear-like tool C3 are rotated in mesh at a crossed-axis angle of 2 to 3( degrees, and a rocking motior of one of the members is imposed, without rectilinear traverse, about an axis P3 which is stationary with respect to the other member, the rate of rocking being such as to cause an average axial advance of the gear through the plane of the tool of not less than 0.005 inch per gear revolution. The angle between the gear axis and the rocking axis may be from 0-90 degrees When the angle is zero, a reverse crowning effect is obtained and, between the limits, is a position where no crowning occurs. Radial in-feed may be imposed during finishing and takes place preferably at the end of a rocking- stroke while the gear and tool are in backlash. The gear may be finished in one single rocking stroke and the ends of the gear teeth may or may not pass the centre-plane of the cutter. The direction of rotation is preferably reversed at the end of a rocking stroke. Specification 524,103 is referred to.
