Abstract

220,192. Sykes, W. E. Oct. 11, 1923. Tools.-A pinion cutter for generating helical gears is provided with helically-formed teeth 7 whose cutting edges 8 - - 12 all lie substantially in a plane at an oblique angle to the longitudinal edges of the teeth and at right-angles to the cutter axis so that continuous double-helical teeth with cleanly-finished apices may be cut on the work. The end faces of the teeth are formed of substantially plane surfaces 15 and 17, the surface 15 being part of the original end face and cut back at 20 and 21 in order to provide correct cutting angles at the edges 8, 9 respectively. The surface 17 is formed by cutting back the end face to provide the correct cutting angle at the edge 12, leaving a radially-extending shoulder 18 between the surfaces 15, 17.
