Milling- cutters. - A spur gear or other profiletoothed milling-cutter has the profile backedoff surface of each tooth of conoid form, generated by a straight line a:, d, always at right-angles to the axis o of the cutter, but sliding at one position on a line a parallel to the axis o, and at another point on a profile, c, e, corresponding to the cutting-edge of the tooth. The position of the line a is so chosen that as the angle of the cutting- face relatively to a plane passing through the axis o varies through sharpening of the cutter, so the tooth profile varies to compensate for this variation and to keep the shape of the tooth constant.
