[Class 56] Relates to a method of sealing a side tube into a vitreous envelope, particularly to a quartz tube that forms the envelope of a highpressure mercury - vapour lamp. According to the invention, a depression 3 is formed in the wall of the envelope 1 by a process that does not involve the distortion of the tube by heat, the bottom of the depression is pierced, and the end of the side tube 2 is then inserted in the depression and fused to the tube 1.
