Abstract

486,673. Stoppers &c. PAROZONE CO., Ltd., and BARR, S. W. Dec. 28, 1936, No. 35521. [Class 125 (iii)] A closure for bottles comprises a washer pervious to gas, and a cover for the washer having one or more passages therein, the cover and washer being maintained in such position that a space always exists between them. The closure may be formed by a cap adapted to screw or to be otherwise secured to the neck of the bottle, and a gas pervious washer with means whereby it may be clamped on the rim of the bottle neck and by which a space is maintained between the perforated top of the cap and the washer. The clamping device for the washer may extend over it to a considerable extent so as to prevent the washer from being blown into the cap by the pressure within the bottle. The perforations in the cap may be at the ends of downwardly extending nipples so that if the bottle is held in inverted position and a small quantity of liquid should leak through the washer, it will be trapped within the space formed by the head of the cap. As shown in Fig. 4, the cap a has a central downwardly extending projection c at the foot of which is a narrow passage d. The cap is screwthreaded at e so that it may be screwed on to a bottle neck. It is also screw-threaded at f to receive the cylindrical member g the base h of which has an opening i. The opening is of such shape that it may receive a key for screwing member g into the cap. A washer j of gas pervious material such as sponge rubber is clamped between the rim of the bottle neck, and the base h. The washer should not permit passage of liquid or should only permit liquid to pass at such very slow speed as will be of no practical importance. Vapours given off by the liquid are allowed to pass through to chamber k and thence through passage d to the atmosphere. As shown in Fig. 9, the cap is formed by two portions l, n which when screwed together form a space u between the washer t and the top of the cover. The washer is clamped between the top of the bottle and the diaphragm r which has an opening s. As shown in Fig. 12, the cap has an internal shoulder v against which rests a rigid disc w having an opening x. The sponge rubber washer is clamped between the top of the bottle and the disc.
