Abstract

485,801. Lamps for lighting roads. HOLOPHANE, Ltd., and ENGLISH, S. April 5, 1937, No. 9621 [Class 75 (iv)] In a lighting fitting for roads, the light-distributing unit, which may surround or entirely enclose the light source, is formed on the side facing the on-coming traffic as a refractor B and on the opposite side as a reflector A. The unit may be of circular or other section in plan, and may be designed, as shown in Fig. 1, to give a symmetrical distribution of light or, as shown in Fig. 2, the refracting portion B may be provided with vertical prisms C to give an asymmetrical distribution. Fig. 6 shows the invention applied to a panel lantern having a horizontal light source such as a mercury or sodium discharge lamp, the refractor panel R having internal prisms and the reflector A being formed of opal glass or enamelled iron.
