Abstract
485,524. Ordnance recoil apparatus. SOC. ANON. DES ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS HOTCHKISS & CIE. Oct. 7, 1937, No. 27219. Convention date, May 4. [Class 92 (i)] A hydraulic brake for an automatic or non- automatic gun has means for permitting a slight free recoil of the gun, whatever may be the longitudinal position of the gun relatively to the cradle in which the gun is mounted. The rod 3 connected to the gun (not shown) is formed at one end as a cylinder 17 engaging over a tapered core 15, the rod 3 being provided with a ring 14 past which the braking fluid flows during the recoil. The rod 3 slides within a hydraulic cylinder 1 and has a port 12 and a head 9, a piston 5 being mounted freely on the rod 3 between springs 6, 8. When the gun is fired the rod 3 first moves freely (from right to left, as shown), the piston 5 being maintained stationary by the inertia of the fluid, and the spring 8 yielding until the piston is entrained by the shoulder 16 on the rod 3, whereupon the piston displaces the fluid through the fully-open port 12 to effect the braking action. During recoil, the fluid pressure displaces a sleeve valve 20 on the core and a portion of fluid passes through ports 19 into the cylinder 17. When the return-to-battery movement takes place, the valve 20 partially closes the ports 19, under the influence of the spring 23, and thereby brakes the run-out of the gun. The speed of run-out can be regulated by a screw handle 26 on a rod 25, which adjusts the port-carrying member 18 relatively to the core 15 and so controls the opening of the ports 19. A damping spring 27 may be fitted as a buffer for the rod 3.
