Abstract

17,996. Haussner, K. Sept. 11, 1908, [Convention datel. Field carriages; recoil apparatus.-Relates to differential recoil guns, that is, to guns which are fired during the run-out, and consists in arranging such guns so that the existing recoil brake, or a speciallyprovided brake, is automatically set to such a braking resistance, when the gun runs out beyond the firing position, owing to a hangfire, that as the barrel reaches its s rearward position no shock is experienced. Fig. 1 shows the gun barrel A in its rearward position with the run-out springs D compressed, and a recoil cylinder C revolubly connected to a barrel projection a<1>. The cylinder C, is provided with longitudinal grooves z, Fig. 3, and a piston E F, the part E of which is connected by a pistonrod c to the gun cradle, the part F being rotated on the part E by grooves n in the cylinder C. When the gun runs out beyond the firing- position, a lever g, extending from a ring G keyed to the cylinder C, is rotated by a cam J on the gun, and the piston part F is thereby rotated to close openings f in the two - part piston, so that the braking resistance is increased since fluid can now only pass through the grooves z when the gun recoils. The lever g may be returned to its normal position automatically or by hand at the end of recoil. The arrangement simultaneously serves as a stopping-brake in case of a miss-fire. In a modification, a friction brake, operated by a stop on the gun, is caused to grip the outside of a hollow rod replacing the cylinder C, when a miss-fire or hang-fire occurs. Fig. 8, shows a further modification applied to guns not fitted with a recoil brake. The cylinder C of a special hydraulic brake C c carried by the gun cradle, has a rib c<2> which, under normal circumstances, forms a bearing - surface for a spring pin E mounted on the gun A. If a miss-fire or hangfire occurs, the pin E enters a recess c<3>, and the cylinder C then moves with the gun and acts first as a stopping-brake and then as a recoilbrake. A similar arrangement is described in which a friction brake replaces the hydraulic brake.
