Abstract

485,122. Sluice-gates. DEANE, H. J. Nov. 19, 1936, No. 31726. [Class 68 (ii)] Sluice-gates, penstocks, &c. are opened and closed automatically through differential or epicyclic mechanism in dependence upon relative and actual water levels upon the two sides of the gate &c, Pulleys A, A<1> or conical shafts are connected to floats on opposite sides of the sluice-gate in such a way that movement of the floats in the same direction causes movement of the pulleys in opposite directions. The pulleys each drive bevel wheels B, B<1> of epicyclic gear including planet pinions C, C<1> on the carrier arm L. Movement of the arm L is thus dependent only upon the relative levels of the water and not upon their absolute levels. When the relative levels differ sufficiently, the consequent movement of arm L causes contactor D to close circuits through spaced switch members to open or close circuits through electromotors adapted.to open or close the gate. A contactor D<1> connected to one of the bevel wheels and thus dependent upon absolute level of one float, may also close a circuit through one of the motors. Contactors D, D<1> are both adjustable. The closing of the contactors may operate indicators showing the necessity for operation which may then be effected manually. The arms F and F<1> co-operating with contactors D, D<1> may be adjustable.
